THE CHALLENGES

Being overweight isn’t easy.  Whether you’re sporting a spare tire or one of the millions classified as morbidly obese, even the average day is a challenge.  There’s a lot of trouble that goes along with being overweight, which most “normal-sized” people just can’t relate to.  Though they might be aware of some of the health risks of being overweight, it’s hard to truly understand what goes on inside a big body – until you’re actually in one.

THE CHALLENGESOne of the biggest challenges of being overweight is just getting around.  Being overweight usually also means being out of shape, with poor stamina and other complications that can make exercising (or even walking) difficult.  Extra weight is just…well, heavy, and walking around with that added pressure on your bones is hard on the body.  Knee and back complaints are common among the overweight, which can make even beginner exercises seem like a nightmare.  Overweight people also commonly experience breathing problems due to the added pressure of their weight, which leads to difficulty with physical exertion (and getting winded very quickly).  It’s rare to see an overweight person strolling along happily like they do in weight loss commercials; you’re more likely to see a red-faced look of misery.

Society itself also presents a big challenge to the overweight.  Being heavy can dictate whether or not you’re allowed to sit at a restaurant, buckle an airplane seatbelt or get onto a ride at an amusement park.  Research and hidden camera testing has shown that people tend to treat overweight people with less respect and attention than those who are at a healthy weight, and sometimes with outright rudeness.  It’s harder for overweight people to find love, make friends or feel truly comfortable in social situations.  Like struggling to exercise, dealing with society and its cruelties is a constant issue for the overweight.

These are just two of the many challenges overweight people face.  Other important issues include the struggle to find comfortable clothing, negative emotions like depression or shame, and the relationship between being overweight and serious health issues.  A day in an overweight body is a difficult one any way you slice it.  Isn’t it amazing what a difference a few pounds can make?
