ARE YOU AT RISK?

There are severe health risks associated with being overweight or obese, including the risk of contracting fatal illnesses.  Being overweight can also obstruct the diagnosis of health issues, making diseases like cancer much harder to detect.

Diabetes, heart disease and other illnesses such as DVT (deep vein thrombosis) all strike overweight people at a far more alarming rate than their average-sized counterparts.  When these conditions strike, overweight or obese patients often have much more aggressive instances of their illnesses.  A healthy lifestyle can greatly improve management of an illness, so overweight patients with poor dietary and fitness habits essentially make their sickness worse.

ARE YOU AT RISK?Advanced or aggressive stages of a disease or other health issue often requires riskier treatment options, or consumption of more medication than healthier patients require.  Overweight patients also bear lower survival rates for illnesses across the board, as their weight can cause surgical or other treatment complications.

Carrying additional weight on your body also increases your risk for bone health issues, including arthritis, joint pain and osteoporosis.  The human body is designed to hold an average-sized body, and our bones can’t take the extra pressure of increased weight.  Overweight and obese people commonly experience severe back, knee and hip problems, often starting as early as their 20s.  Overweight people are more likely to require joint replacement surgery due to these issues, which adds its own set of risks.

Illness is never easy to manage.  For the overweight, pain and illness management is even more difficult due to factors like increased medication and lessened mobility.  Co-morbidity of various illnesses is also a huge risk for the overweight.  Co-morbidity explains a relationship between two health issues, when having one usually equals or increases the risk of contracting the other.  For example, diabetics are at risk for infection, blindness and kidney problems.

This is only a short list of the health risks associated with being overweight.  There are far more health and wellness conditions (and associated comorbid conditions) putting the overweight population at risk.  Even for overweight people in excellent health, risky conditions such as those listed above can strike at any time.  In nearly every instance, simply reducing your weight can greatly reduce your risk of illness or help manage existing health problems.

The question is, do people really know what they should do?
